Dental Issues

May 17, 2011

I think there should be a law (or at least professional courtesy):
Okay, so I took the kids the dentist.  The dentist is Really nice.  I like the dentist.  BUT …
We have dental insurance.  We pay Dearly for dental insurance.  2 “cleanings” are “covered” a year.  Yeah.  So, appointments for the kids. After the appointment, the receptionist says that I owe almost $100.  Um, excuse me, but we have Dental Insurance.  Yes, they know, but they did things Not covered by the insurance.  I’m sorry, perhaps it’s just me, but if you are going to do about $100 of EXTRA work NOT covered by insurance, PLEASE let me know BEFORE you do it.  You can’t “un-do” it, so I obviously owe them the money for the work that they did, but PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE just let me know BEFORE you do the work that this will be an extra charge.  This is the second time I’ve left their office in tears.  I feel like the dentist office was negligent in letting me know BEFORE they did work, that I would OWE them LOTS of money because insurance would not cover it.  We don’t have $100 just sitting around.  Now I get to figure out where the money is going to come from.  Our budget was already tight (anyone that knows us, knows what an understatement that is).  I guess that I’m just really weird that I think of $100 as A LOT of money, but I do.   And what if I didn’t have my Magic Credit Card to put the payment on?  I didn’t know that I would owe anything, so I was not  prepared to pay anything.  Am I the only one who thinks that this is wrong?
So, why are we paying so much each paycheck for this Dental Insurance when it doesn’t even cover what it says it covers???  I like the dentist, but unfortunately if we keep getting these EXTRA charges, I will not be able to use your office anymore.
